The Art of Strings

Rope has a specific quality as a means of restriction. Unlike leather or metal, it conforms to the body it touches, following the curves, pressing into the skin with a warmth and weight that is organic, specific to the natural material. The friction of hemp or jute against the skin has a smell, a texture, a quality of contact that synthetics cannot replicate: it is something that is itself alive, derived from a plant, warm in a way that metal never is.

Shibari, the Japanese art of decorative rope bondage, approaches the bound body as an aesthetic object.

The patterns that the rope traces are not random: they are constructed with attention to symmetry, to the specific body that receives them, to the visual composition of the whole. To be tied in Shibari is to be treated with a level of precise and focused attention that is in itself part of the experience: each passage of the rope, each knot placed with deliberate intention, communicates through touch an attention that is difficult to describe and immediate to feel.

The progression from standing to bound is a physical journey that has a psychological arc.

As the body's freedom of movement is progressively reduced, the breath changes, the mind narrows, the external world is reduced in scope and meaning. Suspension, when the rope supports the weight of the body and the feet leave the ground, produces a state that practitioners describe as unequivocal: a quality of being held that is both literal and simultaneously much more than literal.

The marks left by the rope on the skin, the specific compression patterns, the redness that follows the line of each passage, are for those who know this practice beautiful in their own way: evidence of a passage, documentation of time spent in a specific state, the lingering trace of something that was simultaneously art and intimacy.
