The Threshold of Vitality
No other practice leads to presence with the same radicality as this one. When the breath is controlled, slowed down, restricted, suspended for a few moments under an expert hand, the body stops having alternatives: it cannot think of anything else, it cannot pretend, it cannot be anywhere else. It is completely here. Completely now.
Breath Control works on the most immediate element of existence: the breath. Not in the symbolic sense, but in the literal and biological sense.

When the influx of oxygen is reduced in a controlled manner, ordinary reality vanishes with a precision that is unparalleled: thoughts are extinguished almost instantaneously, worries evaporate, the body focuses entirely on the sensation of the present moment. What remains is an altered state of consciousness that those who have experienced it describe as the purest form of presence they have ever known, an absolute inner silence, inhabited only by the sensation of the living body.
The return of breath is a wave. Not only of oxygen: of relief, of physical gratitude, of a pleasure that radiates from every fibre simultaneously. The brain, which in the previous seconds had clung with desperation to every other available stimulus, welcomes this return with an intensity that has no equivalent in any other practice. Every caress perceived in that moment is worth tenfold. Every sound arrives amplified. The body is alive in an unusual way.
What remains afterwards, once one has returned to normality, is a new and specific awareness: one's ability to rely on oneself completely, and one's resilience in going through something the primary instinct would have wanted to avoid. This discovery belongs to the person who makes it, it is not transferable, it cannot be fully described. It can only be understood from the inside.
