The Seal of Heat
Wax Play is a practice of thresholds. Each drop of wax that falls carries with it a precise temperature, the temperature of the candle specific to the specific distance held, modified by the arc of its descent, and lands on the skin as a brief, sharp contact that resolves almost immediately into warmth. The sensation is not sustained pain: it is a sharp, clear moment of intensity that passes, leaving behind a warmth that is, in itself, its own distinct experience.
The pattern that develops during a session, the accumulated distribution of wax through the body, is both aesthetic and sensual.
Where the drops fall, how they are arranged, which areas are paid attention to and which are not: these decisions belong to the person holding the candle, and make up, over time, a specific record of the geography of the session. The body becomes, in this practice, a record of attention: each solidified drop marking a specific moment in a specific place.
The sound of wax cooling and breaking as the body moves is part of the sensory landscape. The same goes for the smell of melting wax, different varieties produce different scents, part of the selection that shapes the specific quality of the experience.
The visual effect of wax on skin, in certain types of light, has a quality that is genuinely beautiful: sculptural, temporary, intimate in what it documents.
The removal of the wax, the peeling, which occurs gradually or all at once, is its own practice. The micro-sensation of each piece being lifted from the skin produces a quality of stimulation distinct from the application: not acute but wide, not localised but diffuse, a kind of attention over the whole surface that follows the more focused contact of the drops. What the skin brings next is a sensitivity that persists for some time, having received repeated activation, remains responsive and intense.
