The Alchemy of the Abject

There are practices in BDSM that work primarily with physical sensation, and there are practices that work primarily with psychology. Scat works almost entirely with the latter: its intensity derives not from what the body actually experiences but from the weight of the taboo being crossed, the layers of social prohibition being deliberately dismantled.

The taboo around faeces is among the strongest that human culture maintains, so deep, so early in socialisation, so completely internalised that most people experience a visceral response to its mere mention that is entirely automatic. This response is the stuff of practice. The willingness to cross this threshold, to be with the body's most private function without the distance that social convention requires, is, for those drawn to it, a form of submission so complete that nothing remains outside of it.

Conducted consensually, with thorough negotiation of its specific forms, scat play is a practice of absolute acceptance.

The person who offers this, who allows this level of intimate access, who completely suspends the social construction surrounding this function, is demonstrating a surrender that reaches to the biological bottom of what it means to have a human body.

The psychological consequence is consistently described in terms of a specific lightness: the complete suspension of the social filters that usually regulate how we present our bodies and their functions leaves behind, when those filters return, an awareness of how much energy maintaining them requires.
